A high-quality stream rip or a WAV file downloaded from a legitimate source will give you noticeably better results than a YouTube rip. YouTube encodes audio at 128kbps or occasionally 256kbps for AAC, and those compression artifacts get amplified when the AI tries to separate elements. You’ll hear a slightly grainy or watery quality on the output that wouldn’t be there with a clean source.

If you can buy the track from iTunes, Bandcamp, or another download store and export it as WAV or AIFF, do that. If you’re streaming and ripping, use a service that offers lossless streaming, Tidal and Apple Music both do. Live recordings are where things get harder. When a vocal is recorded in the same room as a band, the microphones pick up room sound, bleed from other instruments, and a shared reverb tail. The AI has a harder time drawing the line between “this is vocal” and “this is room sound.” The instrumental stem from a live recording will often have some vocal artifacts left in it.

Songs where the vocalist and the production are sonically merged, think Phil Spector wall-of-sound arrangements, or some vintage soul tracks, those are genuinely difficult. Dense ambient or shoegaze recordings, where reverb is half the point, tend to be rougher. The wet signal mixes everything together in a way that’s hard to unravel.

Making a karaoke track for personal use at home is generally considered fair use in most jurisdictions. Singing along in your living room is fine, practicing for an audition with a backing track you made yourself is fine.

Where it gets complicated: sharing the track publicly, uploading it, or using it commercially. The stems you create still contain the original copyrighted recording. Distributing an instrumental version of someone else’s song without a license isn’t legal, even if you created it yourself using a stem splitter.

What to do with the track once you have it

The most immediate use is obvious: play it and sing along.

If the song is in a key that doesn’t quite fit your voice, most media players and music apps let you shift the pitch without changing the speed. VLC, foobar2000, and GarageBand all do this. A semitone or two in either direction makes a big difference.
